Donor Advised Fund (DAF)

Recommend a grant from your DAF and avoid capital gains on that account.

** A donor-advised fund. It is a charitable investment account, and it is one of the fastest-growing ways money moves to nonprofits in the US.

How it works. Someone puts money into an account at a sponsoring organization, most commonly Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, or a local community foundation. They take the tax deduction in that year. The money is then invested and grows tax-free. Later, whenever they choose, they recommend grants from the account to 501(c)(3) charities. The sponsor writes the check.
